With impeccable timing, Simon has started another meme. Coming off a weekend when I had every intention of writing reviews and then wrote none, this is very useful. Basically, Simon randomly generates a letter for you and then you have to name your favourite book, author, etc. beginning with that particular letter. My letter is…G
I love this wartime novel, which wisely focuses much of its energies on Lydia, my all-time favourite Thirkell character.
Favourite Author…
Lots of possibilities for this one but in the end I had to go with Georgette Heyer. She has entertained me too well for too many years to be dethroned now.
Favourite Song…
“Ghost” by Indigo Girls, an angsty 1990s favourite.
Favourite Film…
Has to be Giant. I love this movie and no matter how often I see it, I always cry during the diner fight scene at the end.
Favourite Object…
My glasses. Very useful for seeing things, reading things, and generally not walking into things.
Very fun! If you’d like to give it a try yourself, go harass Simon for a letter! Or, if you’ve already given this a whirl, share the link to your answers in the comment section below. I feel like I got off quite easy with G – I’m looking forward to seeing what others do with more challenging letters.
Thanks for letting me know – I have no reviews to write now since I reading a 900 page book ! I have entered the meme – waiting to see what I get 🙂
Love Angela Thirkell and I just finished Summer Half and re-reading The Brandons. Actually, I’m pretty sure you were the person who turned me on to Thirkell, for which I will be forever grateful!! Also love Georgette Heyer, both mysteries and Regencies.
You’re making me think. Definitely, a favorite book was “The Grapes of Wrath,” and that and “The Good Earth” are movie classics, too. Favorite authors with “G’s” could be John Grisham and Elly Griffiths. Favorite song: One is Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Favorite object: I’d have to agree on glasses for two reasons: one that you gave above and the other is my large blue plastic glass that I carry around the house filled with iced tea, diet ginger ale or my own concoction of seltzer and fresh lime juice.
Lovely! I am wracking my brains at the moment with letter C!
Gerald Durrell is a favourite author. Goodbye Mr. Chips, Gone with the Wind and Grey Mask by Patricia Wentworth are much loved. Love Heyer too.
Embarrassingly, I still have not read any Angela Thirkell as much as I mean to every time I see a mention. But I do love Giant. I rewatched it recently with my kids and was a little surprised that I had not remembered the (at the time) kind of cutting edge topic of race and bias in the film. And Elizabeth Taylor was so beautiful! I wound up with the letter “B” which proved easier than I thought it would.
Just finished Growing Up for the I can’t remember how many timeth, lol! Now you got me wondering who my favourite Thirkell character is…….? I discovered, through another bookish blog, the joy of Open Library so lots more AT to rediscover!
“Growing Up” is also the title of a wonderful memoir by Russell Baker. I’m trying to read more Thirkell but my library’s collection is sadly lacking. Will have to look into this Open Library thing. My letter was “O” which proved to be quite entertaining to consider.
