Important planning update: after reading Sakura’s thoughts on afternoon tea at Bea’s of Bloomsbury, I am now desperately trying to figure out how I can fit in a visit while I’m in London. It would seem to make for a perfect afternoon if paired with a trip to Persephone Books.
Boys and Reading – Is There Any Hope? – …boys need to be approached individually with books about their fears, choices, possibilities and relationships — the kind of reading that will prick their dormant empathy, involve them with fictional characters and lead them into deeper engagement with their own lives. This is what turns boys into readers.
20 Celebrities with Stunning Home Libraries – when is a photo gallery of libraries ever unwelcome? Nigella Lawson’s is my particular favourite.
Three Books, Two Centuries, and One English Regency – Stephanie Barron picks three books that, for her, best represent the nine years of the English Regency (1811-1820).
Hope you make it to both Persephone Books and Bea’s, Claire!
Looked at all those links – wowzer! What a place for afternoon tea, oh, how gorgeous it all looks! Love the little sexy milk jug, too!
As for the libraries … Oprah’s for me, every time! Comfortable sofas, pretty but large-enough side tables, neat, orderly massed books on the shelves, just my kind of book place. As for Nigella being a true book lover, a conclusion perhaps drawn on account of her being untidy and having books spilling everywhere … well, I think this indicates not a book lover at all, but a book trasher. I love books, too, but I do my best to find a comfortable home on shelves for them, and any overspill go into a large wicker basket until there is a proper home for them. I think Nigella is just a rather untidy person and this in itself doesn’t demonstrate a love of books although the sheer volume of books in that room might indicate a love of books.
I can’t comment about the three Regency books as I’ve only read Persuasion (my favourite Austen.)
I like Diane Keaton and Sting’s libraries. Sting’s looks so fancy, like a university library. And I love the words on top of the bookshelves in Diane Keaton’s (and the floor!). Karl Lagerfeld’s just looks impressive because of the sheer volume of books.
Hey, just stopping by, I’ve just moved to Regina so no blogging for a while (I’m starting classes on Monday, haven’t unpacked fully yet and Thomas is in the hospital again and I’m using library internet), but was thinking of you because I just bought my first new Georgette Heyer novel the other day, Venetia. All the best on your Europe trip!
Thanks for the libraries. I’d kind of like Keith Richards’. It looks the most relaxed. Woody’s is lovely, but just a little too much like one of his movie sets.
This has got to be the “grand slam” of link collections! I am a big Stephanie Barron fan, so her article was especially fun – and the libraries – oh my goodness. I haven’t narrowed down my favorite yet. Bea’s looks like a “can’t miss” place, and I’m sure your mom would willingly go with you once she sees those pictures. 🙂 Thanks for sharing these…why am I so hungry now? 😉
