Hi Claire,
I was looking for lists on Victorian literature online and stumbled upon your blog. I am gobsmacked. How can you possibly read this many books per month? Do you speed-read? Do you work? Sorry, I don’t mean to be nosy or disbelieving, I suppose I am rather jealous and wish I could read this much. 15-20 books per month…WOW, just WOW!
Hi Antonia,
I don’t consider it speed-reading, but I do read very fast. Ironically, I’ve not been working for the past few months and I am reading far less than usual!
I would love to hear what you thought about Life After Life, The Firebird, and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, even if it’s just a one-word dismissal or brief praise! I have all three books and am pondering what to bring on vacation. I got Alif the Unseen right away when I read that you loved it, so that’s a definite, as well as The Misinterpretation of Tara Jupp. Glad you’re back from Europe!
Not sure I’ll ever write full reviews of these books, so here are some brief notes:
Life After Life – excellent, of course (I am a big Atkinson fan).
The Firebird – good, if you already like Kearsley’s style. Slightly long-winded but wonderfully interesting historical setting.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry – sweet but forgettable, which has its merits as holiday reading.
Have a wonderful vacation!
