Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Sharlene from Real Life Reading that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.
Belonging by Nora Krug – a visual memoir of Krug’s quest to make peace with her country’s history – and her own German identity – by learning more about her family’s history.
I Am, I Am, I Am by Maggie O’Farrell – I’ve loved many of O’Farrell’s novels and am very intrigued by this memoir about her bizarrely numerous near-death experiences.
Imogen by Jilly Cooper – I’m an erratic listener when it comes to the Backlisted podcast (I find the hosts irritating but the books and guests interesting) but I did catch the recent episode on Imogen by Jilly Cooper. It sounded light and silly and, having breezed through it as soon as the hold came through, I can confirm it is both those things (in a pleasant enough way).
What did you pick up this week?
I love all the early Jilly Coopers, though the first one, Harriet, is my favourite. One of my daughters also adores them – in one mad clean out phase she sent all the copies to a jumble sale, then regretted it so much I had to go and buy them back. Still got them, and we both re-read them. I didn’t enjoy her later bonkbusters quite as much.
Harriet seems to be the favourite for a lot of people! So much so that I’ve been inspired to check it out from the library and continue my early Cooper exploration.
Okay, I gave Harriet a try but had to abandon it. What made Imogen fun was that it had a sense of humour. Harriet seems to lack one, which made it very hard going for me.
I am, I am, I am is on my TRB for this year, I have heard good things about it so far. Hope you will enjoy it.
I have also only heard positive things so far (not surprising for an O’Farrell book) so am really looking forward to starting it.
I’ve been meaning to read I Am so will be looking forward to your thoughts.
I’ll let you know how it goes!
I have Belonging on my TBR, and I loved I Am I Am I Am when I read it last year. Hope you enjoy your pile. Happy reading, Claire! 🙂
Thanks, Juliana!
I listen to the Backlisted podcast too, Claire…..but I couldn’t be tempted by Cooper’s books. I did see one of her books on the discard shelf at the library, picked it up to flip through the pages, and then I put it back.
Have you tried Daisy Buchanan’s podcast ‘You’re Booked’? The idea of going into people’s homes for a browse through their bookshelves is soooo satisfying.
I’ve also flipped through Cooper’s books at the library and thought they weren’t for me. But these very early books (as opposed to her later mega hit “bonkbusters”) are, I’m happy to say, a very different thing. I have zero interest in ever reading Riders or its ilk.
I tried one or two episodes of “You’re Booked” but it didn’t grab me. Perhaps it’s time to try again!
Nice selection of reads. Thanks for the heads up. All new to me.
Thanks!
