Today is the anniversary of Elizabeth von Arnim’s birth and in honour of that Jane is hosting Elizabeth von Arnim Day. I wasn’t quite organized enough this year to read and review something but she is one of my very favourite authors so I could not let the day go unmarked. Therefore, I thought I’d share the von Arnim’s I have read and reviewed over the years. They are, of course, ranked in order of preference from least favourite to most beloved. Enjoy!
10. The Caravaners
9. The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rügen
5. The Princess Priscilla’s Fortnight
It is interesting you didn’t include Enchanted April. I loved that book but never ventured further with her other books so I am adding your top picks to the list.
I just included the ones I’ve reviewed here, which is why The Enchanted April is missing. I read it back in my pre-blogging days but I have to admit I don’t love it so it’s not one I’ve reread often.
I had heard of only two
Books of her . Thanks for sharing this list
You’re welcome!
Ooo I love it when books are ranked! Even if I love The Caravaners. V tempted to do this myself…
I really like all of these but The Caravaners, while very funny, can be a bit too cruel for my tastes.
I do love Fraulein Schmidt! I didn’t realize it was Elizabeth von Arnim day either so haven’t posted anything. But will soon, as I’ve just begun The Benefactress, one of the last of her works remaining unread by me.
I love The Benefactress! I don’t think it’s one of her best technically but it’s a sentimental favourite of mine. Happy reading!
I’ve read six of the above titles, and like you would put Fraulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther at no. 1. Strangely, it doesn’t seem to get as much publicity as the other titles.
I know! How unfair is that? We must continue to spread the word of its brilliance.
I have read five of those – as well as some others. I do love her writing. I have The Caravaners tbr too. Some lovely covers there.
Von Arnim has been one of my favourite authors for a long, long time (long before I started blogging) so it’s great to see her being celebrated by so many of us!
I have only read one from your list so making a note of some of them.
Wonderful! She is such a varied and entertaining writer that I’m sure you’ll enjoy these.
Wait, why is Enchanted April not on this list? Have you not read it? Or just not reviewed it? I have read and listened to it several times (also loved the movie) and it is definitely my favorite. I think I’ve read seven of her works so far, so many more to read!
I read it long before I started blogging but don’t particularly like it so haven’t reread it since I started the blog. Maybe I’ll give it another try one of these days.
