Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Linda from Silly Little Mischief that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.
It turns out I was a little precipitous in my last Loot post when I optimistically declared that my non-reading days were over. They were not. I have managed to read a grand total of 0 of those books. All I can say in my defense is that sunshine is very distracting. Also, I have discovered The West Wing Weekly podcast, which is allowing me to obsess over the my-all-time-favourite TV show while enjoying walks in the sunshine. It’s the definition of a win-win. Unless you are a neglected book.
Undaunted, I have brought home more books to keep the neglected ones company.
The Odyssey translated by Emily Wilson – Groundbreaking. Radical. Contemporary. These are the kind of words being used to describe Wilson’s recent translation. Shockingly, this is the first (published) English-language translation of The Odyssey by a woman. And isn’t that a bleak thought.
The Ivory Door by A.A. Milne – more Milne for A Century of Books.
North by Brontë Aurell – continuing the publishing obsession with all things Scandinavian, this is much, much funnier than I expected from it’s hipster-aesthetic design while also managing to provide lots of fascinating info.
Honey for Tea by Elizabeth Cadell – a little something soft and undemanding. This sounds like classic Cadell.
Green Money by D.E. Stevenson – okay, this is the one book I have managed to read lately – and one of the few D.E. Stevenson titles I had not read before.
The Tourist Guide by Jaroslav Hašek – Short stories from the author of The Good Soldier Švejk.
What did you pick up this week?

I walked to the library to pick up the book I had on hold and came home with ten! I should have known better, LOL. I put the post on the linky!
That’s the good thing about walking to the library surely: it limits you only to what you can carry out!
It’s wonderful to see someone else reading D.E. Stevenson.
Yes, I’m a big DES fan. I read a lot of her for A Century of Books back in 2012 (which is why there are reviews for 20+ of her books on the blog), kept reading after that (but not reviewing everything), and now I only have a handful left to discover. Her quality is extraordinarily varied but the good or middling-to-good ones are worth wadding through the bad for.
I’m down to only a handful of titles as well. The closest I have found to her style is BJ Chute’s Greenwillow. There is no compare to DES.
I did not know that there WAS a West Wing podcast. I’ve just wandered over there, bookmarked, and can see I am in for a great time with it. I loved the West Wing. My nephew-in-law gave me season 1 from him to me. 🙂 Thank you for sharing the link.
Often, usually new doctors or something official, and my name is called, there is usually a comment at Penelope (my given name). I often say “yes, I’m the long suffering kind”. I think I’ll pick up Wilson’s translation. 🙂
I am currently deep into Scott Kelly’s “Endurance”, finding it quite engaging. Our book group is reading it and will certainly have a lively discussion.
It’s such a good podcast, Penny. The quality of the guests they have is amazing – not just actors and writers from the show, but real-life politicians (like my prime minister, Justin Trudeau) and even Hamilton-creator Lin Manuel Miranda. Fantastic stuff.
A A Milne….I finally watched Goodbye Christopher Robin last week and absolutely loved it. I found a collection of Milne’s writings for $1 at a church book sale last year and need to pull it from my shelves for a closer look. That annual book sale is on again next weekend….more treasure!
Yes, you definitely need to pull the Milne from your shelf and start reading! I am, clearly, a huge fan and the word “collection” make me wonder if you’ve got hold of one of the collections of his writings for Punch. If so, you have a treat in store!
Good hunting at the book sale!
I would like your thoughts on GREEN MONEY–my library has this but it is menat to be a “lesser” DESSIE.I have not read it as yet.
“meant”
I plan to write about it at length soon but the short story is I really enjoyed it. It doesn’t place among either her best or her worst and for me would be somewhere in the middle.
Guess the bottom line is any DESSIE is better than none.Keep up with the honest reviews.
