Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Linda from Silly Little Mischief that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.
Linda has the Mr Linky this week!
The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich – a much-anticipated read for me this week! First published in Russian in 1985 but only translated into English last year, this oral history of Soviet women’s military experiences during the Second World War is just extraordinary.
What did you pick up this week?
I’ll be interested to learn your thoughts on this book. I love reading from around the world and The Unwomanly Face of War could be fascinating. I wonder why it took so long to be chosen for translation?
I’ll be writing about it at more length soon but, to put it simply, it’s marvellous. It’s been eagerly awaiting for decades by history geeks and Russophiles but perhaps there was concern about how large the market might be? Perhaps Alexievich’s Nobel Prize win also helped.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this one!
They are overwhelmingly positive! Hopefully I’ll find the time to write about this week.
A new one for me. I love to read about a totally new book rather the popular ones circulating on the blogs.
