Today marks 200 years since Anthony Trollope was born. Trollope has been a relatively recent discovery for me (I only started reading him back in 2011) but he has quickly become one of my very favourite authors – so much so that I am currently reading two fabulous Trollope-related books: his wonderful novel The Eustace Diamonds and Victoria Glendinning’s excellent biography of him.
Here’s a quick recap of some of my encounters with Trollope so far:
The Small House at Allington *my favourite (so far)
I’ve enjoyed all of these (plus The Three Clerks, which I read but never managed to review) and look forward to reading and rereading many more of Trollope’s books in years to come!
I’ve been reading Trollope for over 20 years. He never ceases to delight. I envy you that you have so many wonderful novels to discover. The Way We Live Now is my second favorite after The Small House at Allington. Make sure you read The Last Chronicle of Barset for more Lily Dale.
He’s a relatively new discovery for me too – which is odd, because I first read the biography around the time it was published (20 years ago?) and then just The Small House at Allington until a couple of years ago. I even vaguely remember The Pallisers being on TV and not watching it. I was young and foolish I guess! and I’m glad that you’re not regretting many years of Trollopelessness as I am. 🙂
Since you have 5 out of #6barsets done, will you join JoAnn and me (and Lisa, perhaps?) for The Last Chronicle in November/December?
I’ve read two books by this author. Liked them very much. I specially enjoy the gentler pace
I just love Trollope, have done since I started with The Way We Live Now back in 2009. It was a group read with an online book club which has since disbanded, but I’ve kept reading Trollope. I’m also currently reading The Eustace Diamonds which will be my 19th Trollope! I’m hoping to finish the rest of the Pallisers this year and also the Glendinning biography which I recently purchased.
You are responsible for my discovery of Trollope. I’m currently reading The Way We Live Now and I’ve completed 4/6 of the Barsetshire Chronicles – hopefully, I’ll finish that series this year.
I think I’ve only ever read The Way We Live Now in university and if I were asked about it I couldn’t tell you a single thing about it. Owing to the anniversary of his birth it seems like he’s coming up a lot. I’m actually REALLY curious to read The Eustace Diamonds!
Hmm, going to have try harder, obviously! Did you see Lord F’s next caper is Dr Thorne?
I have just found your blog through Persephone Books. Having recently started my own book blog, I am in awe of your reading lists! What have I been doing with my time?! I have been recommended Trollope so many times and I am off to the library this week to start my ‘Trollope’ voyage. Can’t wait.
Apologies, I forgot to ask….can you tell me which Trollope work I should read first? Thank you so kindly.
