Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Linda from Silly Little Mischief that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.
A bit of a mixed bag this week, bookwise:
The Art of Baking Blind by Sarah Vaughan – not good
The Rosie Effect – flat out bad
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel – wonderful
And two very, very enjoyable audiobooks:
A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev
The Monarch of the Glen by Compton Mackenzie
What did you pick up this week?
Like the look of The Bollywood Affair
It’s very much a typical romance novel (elements of which irritate me wildly) but I’m having lots of fun listening to it. It’s been a hectic week here so some nice fluff is very welcome.
Too bad about those duds, but there are always more great choices at the library!
It’s so true! And the duds cost me nothing but a little bit of time, thank goodness.
I was thinking that you had recommended The Rosie Effect before, but then I realized that was The Rosie Project – so a sequel that didn’t live up to the original, which is always disappointing.
I loved The Rosie Project but had heard such bad reviews of the sequel that I almost cancelled the hold. I’m glad I picked it up, just to see how bad it was. Definitely not a keeper!
The floodgates burst and SEVEN books on hold arrived at my branch in one day. (On top of the 7 I already had out).
What’s holding my attention right now is Ben MacIntyre’s A Spy Among Friends, about Kim Philby’s astounding and prolongued success as a Soviet agent while serving in high positions at MI6. Partly because he had a real talent for making friends.
Eek! That will keep you busy.
Disappointing to hear that The Rosie Effect is no good – I enjoyed the Rosie Project so much!
Me too! It was rather disappointing.
Too bad about the duds. Especially the Art of Baking Blind. Hope more good books come your way!
I just found The Art of Baking Blind so one dimensional that it frustrated me immensely. All the characters were boringly messed up and generally in awful or emotionally-distant relationships. Not an interesting (or well functioning) person among them.
Thanks for all the updates! You have a really interesting shelf this week.
Ooh, I’m seriously tempted by ‘The Monarch of the Glen’ – especially read by David Rintoul. He’s a great narrator…
He’s fabulous! The audiobook is wonderful and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
I’m so glad you gave a good rating to Station Eleven – it’s one of my favorites of 2014. Just superb. The only thing I’ve checked out this week is Plenty More by Yotam Ottolenghi.
It was not a good book to start while on the bus last week! Nothing quite like reading about a communicable disease while surrounded by strangers.
I had the first two — especially the first one — on my reserve list, so I think you’ve saved me from lugging them home. 🙂
It’s always worth trying – your tastes might be different than mine where these two are concerned. Or not. Still, there’s little to lose when only library books are at stake!
I loved the Rosie Project and really enjoyed the Rosie Effect!
I certainly loved The Rosie Project but obviously can’t say the same of the sequel. Glad you liked it more than I did.
I’ve got a huge load of books on my Nook at the moment, but nothing was jumping out at me on my last trip to the library. So it’s a lot of nonfiction for me at the moment.
Yay for non-fiction! I keep checking books out from the library (most of which never get posted here because I’m too lazy) and then getting distracted by books I own. Lots of good things to read, but not productive when I have holds coming in.
I agree with you about David Rintoul’s reading of Monarch of the Glen. I thought it was wonderful. The book itself was so entertaining but DR’s reading of it was excellent & added so much to the experience.
Hmmm. my library does not have The Monarch of the Glen, except as a tv series… know anything about that? is it worthwhile?
I agree that The Rosie Effect was a disappointment.
