I have had this photo saved in my file for a few years now and, though I haven’t used it until now, I have a soft spot for it. Not because I adore it (although, raspberry-coloured chairs are always delightful) but because it is exactly the kind of space my newly-wed parents would have wanted to recreate in their apartment circa 1978.
Oh, I love the way you mention your newly-wed parents in 1978″! My goodness, we’d been married for 14 years by then but even in 1964 this would’ve been the epitome of style although the chairs would, no doubt, have had dark orange upholstery instead of raspberry! Ditto, the lampshade. I think combining somewhere to eat with books is a great way of saving space in small apartments/houses.
When I first saw this, I thought, “1965”, but this look could definitely be 70s, too! I would love eating near books like that, but I would probably be a terrible conversationalist because I’d be perusing the books.
I like the ambiance in the photo of eating amidst book splendor. I sit at my computer opposite my big bookcase with books and pottery arrayed to my liking. It is the most comfortable feeling to be surrounded by one’s books.
I have a question having just arrived at this wonderful blog.
Can you tell me what is the name of the painting at the top of the page and who is the artist? I love paintings of women reading, and this one strikes me in particular.
Ah, yes, I have lived this only in orange! Fun
Have to admit to being old enough to have had a probably less pricy IKEA version of this in our first flat in London in the late 80s. Still like it though and love to see those in other people’s houses as you can so easily peruse what they are reading whilst eating and having hopefully good converstation.
Oh, I like that! The shelves need more books crammed onto them though 🙂
Love those raspberry chairs! And that light fixture, fabulous. Glad you hung on to this one.
