I only learned about Peggy Ann’s Read Scotland 2014 challenge a few days ago but once I did there was no chance that I was not going to join. This sort of reading challenge works perfectly with A Century of Books and, given how many Scottish authors I am already planning to read for that (there will certainly be offerings from D.E. Stevenson, O. Douglas, and Compton Mackenzie), this seemed a natural fit. I’ve signed up for the Ben Nevis level (13+ books) and, as usual, will be keeping track of my progress on my Challenges 2014 page.
Are any of you participating in this challenge? Do you have any suggestions for great books by Scottish authors or set in Scotland?
Alexander McCall Smith was the first that came to my mind – not sure how many of his would help overlap with the Century Challenge, though?
I’m not too fussed about the overlap, though it’ll be nice when efficiencies occur. I’ve already got a library hold placed on AMS’s upcoming release, The Forever Girl.
What an awesome reading year you are going to have, Claire! Really looking forward to reading your posts in 2014. For Scots, Josephine Tey and Muriel Spark pop to mind.
I’m excited! Thanks for the suggestions.
As a Scotsman I think I’d be cheating a bit if I joined this challenge! But I will follow it with interest! On Scottish authors, if you’ve not read them before I can thoroughly recommend Louise Welsh, Iain Banks and the classic work of Lewis Grassic Gibbon.
Thanks for the ideas, Col! I’ve not heard of Louise Welsh before but the works of Lewis Grassic Gibbon are very much on my list of possibilities.
Gibbons trilogy ‘A Scots Quair’ is widely read and loved in Scotland – was even made into a TV series! But whatever you choose I hope you enjoy it.
The Camomile by Catherine Carswell is a good one (and it’s a Virago!)
Sounds intriguing!
If you are a crime fiction fan, check out Denise Mina, tartan noir at it’s finest! James Kelman is another good Scottish read.
I’m not much of a crime fan but thanks for the ideas!
I’d recommend Neil M. Gunn, particularly The Silver Darlings, which is his best, I think.
I just found out about this challenge. Denise Mina, yes; also, Kate Atkinson, Gordon Ferris, Mark Douglas Home, A. McCall Smith. I haven’t read a book by a Scottish author that I did not like.
