Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.
The Two Mrs Abbotts by D.E. Stevenson – I’m reading Miss Buncle Married now (and, shockingly, having more success with it than I did with Miss Buncle’s Book) so it’s only right to have the next book ready to go as soon as I’m done.
Hector and the Search for Happiness by François Lelord – As Hector travels from Paris to China to the United States, he keeps a list of observations about the people he meets, hoping to find the secret to happiness. Combining the winsome appeal of The Little Prince with the inspiring philosophy of The Alchemist, Hector’s journey around the world and into the human soul is entertaining, empowering, and smile inducing-as winning in its optimism as it is powerful in its insight and reassuring in its simplicity.
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon – No. I checked this out and started to read it, but no. Just no. I am sure it will be the hit everyone expects it to be but it is not for me.
What did you pick up this week?
I’m not familiar with these books. One of the best things about the library is not having spent money on a book that turns out to be not so great. Have a great week.
I completely agree! I only buy books these days that I’ve either read before and look forward to rereading or which are by authors I trust. Anything that could possibly prove a dud, I get from the library.
I’m envious that you can get DE Stevenson at your local.
Not at my local, sadly, but we have a great inter-library loan system within the province. I’ve had DES books shipped in from 1000 miles away, all for free!
D.E. Stevenson is near impossible for me to find down here. Interesting response to The Bone Season. It’s not my typical genre, but the description (and Karen’s enthusiastic description over at Cornflower) has me very interested. Just curious, how far did you get before you put it down?
I’m only able to get hold of the DES books because we have such a good inter-library loan system. My library only has the books that have been recently republished by Sourcebooks. As for The Bone Season, I only managed maybe ten pages before I put it aside.
Hector and the Search for Happiness looks good. Enjoy your loot.
Thanks, Linda.
I had to google The Bone Season, I haven’t heard anything about it. From the description, I’d be saying no as well. I’m a little surprised it’s the first of seven novels!
Hallo, Hallo!!
This is the first time I sorted out how / when to participate in Library Loot! 🙂 I am thankful that I have as I had such a wicked time writing about all the lovely books that came in!! 🙂 I was quite shocked I was #3 on the Linky! Thanks for the head’s up on the Bone Season. Whenever I get a feeling like that about a book, I just march it right back to the library! Or, on the odd occassion donate it! 🙂 Honestly, I didn’t even bother to look it up! Smiles.
Hector’s Search for Happiness may appeal to me, as I have it earmarked to read The Little Prince at some point,.. we shall see! I never heard of the first book &/or series. What would you compare it too!?
Sadly, none of these appeal to me this week … but we can’t enjoy every book, can we?
What have I been reading? Well, after Jane Gardam’s wonderful Old Filth (acronym, as I’m sure most reading this will know, for Failed in London, Try Hong Kong) I am now into her second of this trilogy, The Man in the Wooden Hat, and loving that, too.
Also, I have a couple of super Shire Books to read: Fashion in the 1920s by Jayne Shrimpton (nothing to do with Jean Shrimpton, I don’t think, the 1960s model) and Fashion the Time of The Great Gatsby by LaLonnie Lehman (who is a Prof of Theatre at Texas Christian University, Forth Worth but who, to me, sounds more like a character from The Great Gatsby!) I am a great Shire Books fan!
I’m afraid I’ll have to join you in the “just no” verdict on The Bone Season. I made it to page 107, but that was enough for me. Perhaps those who read more fantasy than I do might like it?
