Have you seen the striking new covers for the six Georgette Heyer titles Arrow is releasing in June? Regency Buck, The Convenient Marriage, The Grand Sophy, Faro’s Daughter, Frederica, and Friday’s Child are all wonderful books (The Grand Sophy and Frederica are particular favourites of mine) and, for those just discovering Heyer, this collection would be an excellent introduction. I love how many of the details from the book are included in some of the designs: the theatre setting for Friday’s Child is perfect and it is wonderful to see all of Sophy’s animals on the cover of The Grand Sophy. Personally, I’ll stick with the older Arrow editions, where the covers are illustrated with paintings (compare: The Grand Sophy, Regency Buck and Faro’s Daughter), but I do think these new covers are pretty.
New Georgette Heyer Covers

These covers are pretty!!
I’m not sure how I feel about them. For anything else I’d probably be on board, but I think, like you, I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to Heyer.
I like them!
I also love the older Arrow covers, and the size is just right too. These are certainly eye-catching, though.
Beautiful! And very enticing.
I prefer the older covers!
These are very pretty. I have a few of the older Arrow editions but I prefer the Sourcebooks editions from the US. Elegant covers, creamy paper & that lovely, floppy, American paperback feel.
Very striking and appropriate. I think the publisher has done a great job. Vive Georgette Heyer!
Hahahaha, dammit, Arrow! I am such a sucker for new shiny matching covers, and this style of cover is a particular favorite of mine. They’re gorgeous!
At last, a publisher who reads the books when reprinting a series! (Angela Thirkell has recently suffered slightly in this respect.) I like the snuff-mixing bottles for Regency Buck!!
I like the old covers better, but these definitely have an appeal – the same appeal that those Bloomsbury group covers did a few years ago.
Hmmm…I dunno. I think I might get myself a couple of these…. Like you, I still like the paintings better, though.
These are nice, but I think the older Arrow covers are better, they convey the spirit of the novel so well 🙂
Dear Captive Reader, I was brushing up on my research for the new Regency Romance novel I’m writing and bought Faro’s Daughter in this new design. I have to say the quality of the paper and the printing is dreadful! The previous print run (6 or so years ago) was of much higher quality! I was looking at Arrow to publish my RegRom but now I’m left wondering if they are perhaps ‘downgrading’ this genre?!?
I’m a traditionalist about some things (like Georgette Heyer ;-)) and I prefer the historical paintings — although my favorites are the original illustrations by Arthur Barbosa.
But these are fun, and may be intended to attract a new, younger reading demographic? e.g. those young teens who might see a historical portrait and be reminded of homework ;-p
Ahhh! It probably is to attract a younger demographic. The penny has dropped. Thank you, DMACSF. And I also love the old illustrations!
