Have you heard that Andrew Davies is adapting War and Peace into a six hour television miniseries? Davies is responsible for some of my very favourite adaptations – Wives and Daughters (1999), Vanity Fair (1998), and, of course, Pride and Prejudice (1995) – and I cannot wait to see how this turns out. Having seen how wonderfully he handled both Elizabeth Bennet and Becky Sharp, I trust Davies to do full justice to the entirely charming Natasha.
War and Peace and Andrew Davies

That is very exciting! Thank you for letting us know. Now that Downton is over I am hoping for some new quality television shows.
It is exciting but I doubt it will help to fill your Downton-less television schedule: the project has only just been announced so it will still be a long time before it comes together – more than enough time for another season or two of Downton Abbey! But, in the meantime, you can always work through some of Davies’ other work: Bleak House, the new American-version of House of Cards, The Way We Live Now…the list goes on!
He also did Bleak House back in 2005 which is just brilliant. I didn’t realize he did Wives & Daughters — one of my favorites!
Bleak House is brilliant – even I loved it and I am far from being a fan of Dickens!
Something to look forward to. I might even have finished the book by the time it is showing on TV!
It is always good to have a deadline to aim for! 😉
How exciting! I hope six hours will be enough – although Bleak House was astonishing for the amount of stuff it packed into each episode…
I think it will be enough – especially once you cut out all of the philosophizing that there is in the book. It will be shorter than Sergei Bondarchuk’s epic film but I trust Davies to make it work.
