Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.
Ooty Preserved by Mollie Panter-Downes – Long before I knew Panter-Downes was a short story writer, a novelist, or a journalist, I knew she had written this book, which shows up in the bibliography of practically every other book about India I’ve read. After loving her other books, it seemed like time to finally try this for myself.
Autumn Crocus and Call it a Day by Dodie Smith (alias C.L. Anthony) – More Dodie Smith plays! Dear Octopus was very fun and I am interested to see how these two compare.
The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry – Jenny at Shelf Love reviewed this last week and it sounds wonderfully funny.
Elizabeth Gaskell: A Portrait in Letters by J.A.V. Chapple – I have been wanting to read this ever since I discovered what a brilliant letter writer Gaskell was while reading Jenny Uglow’s biography of her.
What did you pick up this week?
Did you know both of you have Mister Linky up this week?
My fault. I have fixed my post now.
Thanks, Marg!
Thanks for the heads up, Bonnie.
I must try to findthe Ooty book. I visited the area ages ago and its one of those picture perfect places.
I can’t wait to read this book, Mystica. I love reading about hill stations and, knowing what a wonderful writer Panter-Downes is, this is sure to be a treat!
Ooo, I actually have got a book out the library this week! London War Notes…
Hurrah!!! I hope you adore it.
I didn’t know about this book on Gaskell – you amaze me with the treasures you find!
I have had my eye on this for a couple of years (having checked that the library had it back when I was reading the Uglow biography) so hope it was worth the wait! But, really, given what I’ve seen of Gaskell’s wonderful letters, I am sure it will be.
The Willoughbys sounds interesting. Enjoy your loot.
Doesn’t it sound great? I think it will be very fun.
I have requested a copy of Ooty Preserved on Library Interloan. My Aunty was a dormitory housemother at a boarding school there in the early 1960’s so I doubly interested in this one.
What an interesting experience that must have been for your aunt (both to be in Ooty and to be a housemother)! Glad you were able to find this via ILL and hope we both enjoy it.
Ooty Preserved is on my ‘the library has it and I’ll order it one day’ and I suspect you may inspire me to promote it up the ranks. And now I must check the catalogue for Mrs Gaskell’s letters.
When I saw ‘The Willoughbys’ I immediately thought it was a Joan Aiken book! It sounds like quite a delight!
