What I have learned from years of obsessively searching out photos of home libraries: apparently there are a good number of people who don’t require or desire fully furnished rooms. Or maybe they are just very antisocial and think that if there is only one chair, no one will feel tempted to come in and distract them. Having a family who considers distracting me while I am reading the highest form of entertainment, I can sort of understand that logic.
Library Lust

Ahhhh. Sanctuary.
Yes, ahh sanctuary, but really this room looks like it’s been furnised solely with books in mind. Nothing wrong in that if that is what the owner wants. But it looks like left-over furniture has been used, things that wouldn’t fit in elsewhere in the house. Thar, or they’re waiting for a the sofa to be delivered! I’d like more furniture of the comfortable sort – a lovely long sofa I could lie down on, an ottoman for books/magazines/tray with tea or coffee, and there would have to be flowers somewhere.
I loved this, until I scrolled down and saw there was almost nothing there…. I need something to put my feet up on, at least, and where is my cup of tea supposed to go?? But lovely to see a room where the books aren’t a design afterthought (or so it seems).
All this needs really, is a rolling ladder (and a nicer slipcover for that chair, and — Simon’s right, an ottoman, and …)
I would definitely need the step ladder. Love the armchair. Heaven on earth….
I have a library ladder very similar to the one in the picture. It is next to a comfy chair and used as a spot to put my cup of tea or coffee, depending on my mood, and a candle or chocolate or . . . My library is also my office and really my sanctuary. Tom does have a habit of coming in and sitting down on one of the chairs – unless the door is closed. ha!
Looks sort of like a stage setting to me.
“When the curtain opens, we find old Colonel Carruthers alone in his study….”
I am of the one-chair-in-the library mind, but would need a footstool, a wee table, and a cozy throw.
A footstool or better still one of those long seated chairs, and at the moment, an open fire, then it would be perfect.
I think it looks lovely. Just add a second chair, and so cozy.
LOL
Maybe they live alone? 😉
