This photo showed up in my Google Reader feed today from the tumblr site Women Reading and I liked it so much that I was sure some of you would too!
English woman in Women’s Auxiliary Air Force uniform reading a magazine with her gas mask beside her. Photograph by David E. Scherman. London, September 1941.
How apposite! I just watched the telemovie of Sarah Waters’ The night watch last night. Not much reading in that – there there was a writer – but it was set (as you may know) in London in 1941, 1944 and 11947). Love the photo.
What a great reading women! I love how the photographer captured her here; so clear and crisp, with the rest of the scenery hazy. A foreboding of days ahead, and a character portrait of the steadfastness of the British people.
Your reading woman series always brings the best portraits. Thank you.
Lovely photo. I was trying to figure out where it was taken. Suspecting Trafalgar and after doing a little google mapping,I’m pretty sure it “is” Trafalgar. If she lifted her head and looked out she would be looking down Whitehall maybe?? I see a lion and the steps of Nelson’s column.
Readers will always find a way to get some reading in.
